What this site measures, and how to switch it off

Short version: aggregate visit counts, no cookies, no advertising, nothing shared with anyone, and no attempt to work out who you are. If you would rather not be counted, there is a button below and it works immediately.

What is collected

Two things, both aggregate.

• Visit statistics via a self-hosted instance of Umami, running on my own server: page visited, referrer, campaign tag from the link, country, browser and device type, time on page. No cookies, no local storage, no fingerprinting.
• Web server logs, kept for security and troubleshooting, with the last part of the IP address removed before writing.

What is not collected

• No cookies and no advertising or marketing trackers of any kind.
• No tracking across other websites. The data never leaves this server.
• No attempt to identify individual visitors or match a visit to a person, a company, or an email recipient. Link tags identify a type of audience, never a reader.
• No third-party analytics, no data brokers, no reverse-IP company lookup.
• Nothing is sold, shared, or transferred to anyone.

Why

To find out which parts of the writing are useful and which links are worth keeping. That question is answerable from aggregate numbers, so it is answered from aggregate numbers. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), limited to statistics about the service itself.

How long

Visit statistics: 25 months, then deleted. Server logs: 30 days.

Opt out

This sets a flag in your browser that stops the counter on every page of this site. It takes effect straight away and costs nothing.

Your rights

You can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be deleted, or object to the processing entirely. Given that nothing here identifies you, in practice there is usually nothing to hand over — but ask, and you will get a straight answer. If you are in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your national data protection authority.
